The Legend…

As one tribal legend goes, in the ancient past, when the gods of heaven descended to Earth, a young goddess was walking along a riverbank on a lovely spring morning. One fateful day, she met and instantly fell in love with the human son of a local chief. Their love grew and the two lovers metin secret each morning at their own privateplace sharing the joy they found in being together.

Far too soon, the goddess’ father learned of the secret affair and forbade his daughter from seeing the man again. Her love was too great and she disobeyed. Learning of her disobedience, her angry father used his powers making her invisible to man.

The next day, when the young man came again to meet his love, she could not be seen. The sound of her voice drifted gently to his ears, but not being able to see his beloved brought tears to his eyes. Inspired by his love, the young man sat on the riverbank and carefully wove a cloak of flowers. Placing the floral cloak on her shoulders, he took comfort in seeing her silhouette. But he could not truly see her or the tears of heartbreak which ran down her cheeks as she suffered from misfortune being punished at the hands of her angry and seemingly uncaring father. Hearing her sobs, the young man also wept.

Watching them from above, the god’s heart warmed and he took pity on the young lovers. He saw the true love his daughter felt for the young human and chose to remove his curse of invisibility. Instantly, the two blessed lovers stood eye to eye, filled with love and joy. The god-maiden’s floral cloak fell from her shoulders to the ground. Where it fell, hundreds of new, pure white flowers sprang up from the river bank. Each flower held only a single petal shaped like the floral cloak the young man had woven for the goddess he loved.

Calla Lilies are now considered to be symbolic of purity and sincerety…

Nature first produced only the white Calla Lily which grows in full or patrial sun along the banks of ponds, streams and rivers. Their lovely spring blooms exude a sweet fragrance and are often planted indoorswithin containers and as landscape decoration in gardens.

Today, botanists have produced many new varieties of Calla lilies with colors ranging from golden yellow to red, pink, orange and even purple. They carry names such as White Sail, Green Goddess and Red Desire. Popular at weddings, bouquets of various colored Call lilies reflect the giver’s wishes for well-being, harmony and health.
